Transylvanian villages - a profitable alternative for tourism and retirement.

Have you ever thought how it would feel to be next-door neighbours with Prince Charles? Due to the current property prices in the UK, you are probably looking at saving over a few lifetimes to be able to afford such an investment. What are the alternatives? Probably quite a few, most of them coming again with a rather high pricetag, but one of them is…Transylvania!

According to The Daily Mail and Jurnalul National, Prince Charles bought a property in Romania, more exactly in Transylvania.  Apparently he bought few houses (under the Mihai Eminescu Trust Foundation) in Viscri, a village 8 km away from the main road connecting Brasov and Sighisoara.  Viscri village is known for its fortress protecting a 12th century church.  How were his visits received by the neighbours, find out yourself from the Jurnalul National article above. What is special about Viscri? Nothing, when compared to other Transylvanian villages. A quick image search on Google returns only pictures of the fortified saxon church in the village, which is same for other villages in the area, like Biertan (for a comprehensive review of the saxon churches in Transylvania, you can have a look at this website, with detailed photos but very little english content). Then why Viscri? Without trying to guess Prince Charles’ thoughts, it is probably easier to generically talk about Transylvanian villages. Yes, first thing that comes to mind is Dracula, but for the people actually living in Transylvania Dracula is as present, influential, and important as King Arthur is for a Cornish…So, away from legends and the associated touristic interest, Transylvanian villages do have the peace and tranquility that you would struggle to find anywhere else. Being away from the civilised world does have its perks, but also means that the infrastructure is not there yet, with roads being more suitable to offroad vehicles rather than slicky city cars. Plus, which is very important, the oportunities in the area come with pricetags at least ten times cheaper than the corresponding alternatives in the EU. Things are likely to change in the near future, as more such gems are discovered by the investors, but at the moment they offer the ideal choice for a quiet holiday or a retirement cottage.
